Welcome to Wordless Wednesday!

I’m lucky to live in a part of the world that is so exceptionally beautiful, particularly in the summer.  For me, getting away from the manuscript, even for a day, is just what I need to give me a fresh perspective.

IMG_3427So, writer peeps, what do you all think could happen, might happen, did happen in a setting like above?

Happy writing,
Melia

Welcome back to Wordless Wednesday!

One of the things I love about summer are the fairs that take place in our area.  And while the food, and the rides, and eating just before a ride (not recommended, by the way) are a huge part of going to the fair, my favorite is visiting the aminals.  (That’s a deliberate misspelling, and a nod to my sister, who visited the fair for the first time this year! 🙂 )

Anywho, today’s Wordless Wednesday pic is from our county fair:

So, writer peeps, what do you suppose is going through this little guy’s head?

Happy writing,

Melia

Back in my early years at The Male Observation Lab, a.k.a. the day job, one of my mentors once swore that if every family had a zucchini plant, it would put an end to world hunger.

Being young, inexperienced, newly married, and relatively broke, I took that to heart, and planted my first crop of zucchini that year.  It wasn’t until about a month later that a co-worker pointed out that nine plants was more than I’d need for two people.  Let’s just say she was right. . ..

Summers in my part of the world pretty much guarantees that there’s no need to worry about planting any zucchini at all — someone always shares.  Just like this bad boy:

P1140882I don’t know about you, but I think size matters.  Whatever it weighed, I knew it could take multiple recipes to use up.  So thanks to Google and what was in my file, I got started.  First, zucchini muffins (yes, yes, they’re Paleo!) . . .. P1140892and I tossed some into a double batch of chicken soup. . . and shredded some for a side dish. . . and used more of the shredded stuff in a doubled meatloaf recipe. . . and also in a zucchini relish (mainly so I could finish it up).

But that was just the start.  See, it seems that everyone’s zucchini plant has gone extra uber-bonkers this year, which generally causes even the Scrooges of the world to wanna share their bounty.  Good of them, right?

Sometime this weekend, I’ll be canning zucchini relish and making a non-Paleo Zucchini bread for the nieces.  But I also figured I can’t be the only one dealing with a zucchini on steroids.  So.  What are your favorite zucchini recipes?

Happy eating,

Melia

Welcome to another Wordless Wednesday!

I love summer, mainly because with the warmer weather comes the opportunity to commune with the great outdoors.  And in my part of the world, there’s plenty of it – like this jewel:

P1030113So, my fellow writing peeps, whether you’re writing contemporary romance, romantic suspense, or historical romance, what does your muse think of this setting?  Is it something that’s useable in your WIP?

Raising a glass to our muses, without whom we’d struggle through our manuscripts. . . in my case, even worse than I do now!  🙂

Happy writing,

We All Scream for Ice Cream!

It all started when I rushed through a local box store to pick up cat litter.  Seriously.

I decided to by-pass the crowd inching their way down the center (why do they always do that when you’re in a hurry?), and cut through an aisle instead.  And that’s when I laid eyes on it: an ice cream maker, a stainless steel wonder with an ice-cold promise of relief from the stifling heat outside.

I figured it might be worth trying.  After all, what’s summer without ice cream?  Hubby and nieces love ice cream.  They eat gallons of it.  With our own little machine, the homemade version wouldn’t have all the extra preservatives and unpronounceable stuff in it, right?  And besides, I could probably find a Paleo version somewhere, so I could have some, too!  I hadn’t had one taste – none, nada, nothing-o – of the stuff for almost two years now.  Didn’t I deserve some?  (How’s that for justification? 🙂 )

And so it began.

I bought the sucker and proudly brought it home.  Then there was the search for the perfect Paleo ice cream.  It didn’t take long since a fellow blogger posted a blueberry ice cream recipe not that long ago.  (Thank you Cavewoman Cafe!)  The maiden voyage into ice cream making was on!

Mixing up coconut milk and blueberries.

Adding lemon peel, then later, the juice from this lemon. Don't skip this step -- it adds a fabulous flavor to the ice cream!

Patiently waiting for the ice cream maker to do its magic.

Voila! Paleo Blueberry Ice Cream. Soooo yummy!

Voila! Paleo Blueberry Ice Cream. Soooo yummy!

I must admit, it was way more complicated than opening a tub of ice cream, but it was really, really, REALLY good!  And I didn’t crash from it, either – BONUS!

What’s your favorite ice cream?  Have you tried making it instead?  What’d you think?  Good?  Bad?  Worth the trouble?

Happy summer,

Melia

Ah, parenthood. . ..

It’s been 3 weeks since my 14-year-old Niece 2’s arrival, and I gotta say, it’s a whole new world in the Alexander household.  My younger sister’s sitting back, observing, and restraining her laughter at some of the new-to-me situations her kid’s bringing to my life.

So, what’s different with the arrival of Niece 2 since she flew in on a big jet from the South Pacific?  Go grab a drink and let me count the ways. . ..

1.  I’ve learned my life is not my own.  So far, there’s been cross-country training and core workout training. IMAG0737There’s her fall schedule and books to buy.  There’s a tour of her new school and angst over whether or not she’ll make friends.  There’s clothes shopping (who forgets to bring SOCKS but remembers a stand-up cardboard cut-out of Niall Horan?).

She’d also like to go to the pool a couple of times a week as well as take piano lessons.  Once school starts, I predict even more hauling her around.

Then there’s the laundry.  Good grief.  How could one more human being add two extra loads each week?  I’m beginning to think I should restrict the number of baths she can take each day.

IMAG0733Yeah, yeah. . .. those of you whose spawn were under your care from the beginning are rolling your eyes.  But, really, Hubby and I were a couple of DINKS (Double Income, No Kids) for the LONGEST time.  And when our then-18-year-old Niece arrived three years ago, we figured we lucked out since we got the experience of a sort-of offspring without the 3 a.m. feedings and diaper changes.  *Snort* (Have I got a few stories for you. . ..)

I’m sure some of you think we’re insane to have her sister move in, too.  I get to reserve judgment on that one, but you might be right.

2.  I’ve learned that when you’re around a teen, you gotta watch what you say like a hawk.  Or maybe just a parent.  Regardless, dirty jokes are now taboo in our home.  Do you have any idea how freakin’ hard that is?

Instructions given to Niece 2 need to be specific.  Another hard one for me to learn, because, really, “don’t do that” seems pretty self-explanatory.

3.  Justin Timberlake.  (Grrrr!)  His song “Mirrors” will soon be added to my list of songs-I-can’t-help-but-know-the-words-to-but-wish-I-didn’t.  Here’s a sample of the lyrics:

It’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me
I couldn’t get any bigger
With anyone else beside of me
And now it’s clear as this promise
That we’re making two reflections into one
Cause it’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me, staring back at me

Yeeesh.  If I looked in the mirror and Hubby’s face stared back when he wasn’t in the room, I’d freak.  Just sayin’. . ..

Given her taste in music, I’m willing to bet there will be worse even more memorable songs.  Which scares me.

4.  There’s more whine to go with my wine.  Did you know a 14-year-old can sound a lot like a 4-year-old?  It’s true.  Niece 2 has this selectively used, high-pitched tone that makes me raise an eyebrow.  Especially when she’s asked to do something and she responds with, “It’s soooo hard.” Said like she’ll never figure out a math problem unless it involves a sale on a great pair of short shorts.  (Yeah, I’m working on that, too.)

Really, kiddo, use your words without the intonation.  I promise you’ll still be heard.

5.  There is, once again, a picky-eater in our home.  I swear if all I bought were bags of Oreo cookies and tubs of ice cream, Niece 2 would think she’d been sent off to some fantasy land full of. . . well. . . Oreo cookies and ice cream.

Breaking her of the sugar rushes won’t be easy.  It sure wasn’t easy with her sister, either.  Which makes me wonder if my sister — their mom — fed them that stuff for a reason.  (Please see 4 above.)

6.  For her there can never be too many accessories.  Particularly dangly stuff.  And shiny stuff.  And glittery stuff.  *Rolls eyes*  I can’t believe she keeps it all straight, tracking each piece like part of a prized collection.  Which now makes me wonder if there’s enough brain power for silly things like reading and math. . ..

7.  Drama queens can reside in a teenage body.  I know some of you are nodding your head in understanding.  Or sympathy.

Suffice it to say that my little drama queen hasn’t pulled the kind of stuff on me that she has on her mom.  Yet.  Maybe because, deep down, she knows her mom isn’t trying to “make my life miserable.”  (Insert a whine to get the full effect)  I, on the other hand, just might if she pushed it. . ..  Is that too harsh?

In all honesty, Hubby and I are happy that Niece 2 has moved in and added another dimension to our family.  It’s going to take some adjustment, but she’s bright and eager to learn (once we get past the whining), and her presence has broadened our perspective on life.  I just hope the boy-thing and my-friend-hates-me-my-life-is-over thing don’t pop up too soon or too often.

On the other hand, there could be a few stories that can come out of it, right?

Hello, and welcome to Wordless Wednesday!

My sister and I strolled through a local park one afternoon.  When I saw this, I thought of all the people who’d passed underneath it, and wondered what secrets this series of arches have been privy to. . ..

DSC_1239So, my blogosphere peeps, what do you think these secrets might be?  And for my writer friends, I hope it tickles your muses into action.  🙂

Happy Wednesday!

I’m running away from home this weekend.  Yep, packing up my bags and heading out.  Just me.  Unleashed on the world!  Well, okay, maybe more like unleashed to someplace just a few hours north, but still. . . I’ll be untethered by Hubby, Kitties, or Niece!  *Happy Dancing*

Heh.  Any bets on how long I’ll last before I get homesick enough to call home?

Anyway, I offer you this taste of summer, grown on my back deck, and surprisingly still alive!  (Note: regular watering helps.  *nods head sagely*)

DSC_1660Have a great weekend!  I know I will. . .. 🙂

How Does Your Garden Grow?

basil, blogs, gardens, Melia Alexander, summer, writing

Ah, summer. Finally! After seemingly endless months of teasing, Mother Nature has granted us sunshine. In the Pacific Northwest, that isn’t a very long time, so I don’t bother to do much of a garden.  Well, okay.  Fine!  So that’s just a convenient excuse.  🙂

I usually start out with great intentions for an honest-to-goodness garden I can be proud of, and I even put the plants in myself.  With gloved hands, of course.  (Dirt — ICK!)  But, see, that’s when the problem starts.  The plants grow.  And they get too demanding.  (Guess they don’t care I’m a writer, either! – Sniff)  They want to be watered and fertilized.  Then weeds sprout and have to be pulled.  And Ohmigod, the SLUGS!  They’re just GROSS!  (I swear the six-inch sucker I saw the other day had me screaming.  *Shudder*  Which would’ve been acceptable if it was later than 6 a.m.)

This summer, I vowed, would be different.  Not only would I enjoy the sunshine and all the great outdoor activities, but this summer, I’d also plant something edible, and let it grow enough to be consumed.

With that in mind, I put some basil plants in a pot.  (Hey, herbs count, don’t they?)  I watered them, laid a slug bait barrier down, and the stinking things actually grew!  (Funny how that works.)  After a blast of warm weather, the basil was ready to be made into my version of Pesto.  Yum!

I took this:

Fresh out of the garden. (The kitchen smelled fab!)

Blended it with olive oil and other stuff:

Turned it into this:

Then put it on baked cod like this:

Yumminess on a plate!

I also figured it was about time I fed my family a meal that didn’t come in a can!  (Don’t get used to it!)

Okay, dinner’s over.  Back to work.

Sigh.  I need to chill like they are.  One day.  When the draft of this current manuscript is complete.  Soon.  Maybe.  Hopefully there’ll be some summer left!
